Vice President Kamala Harris predictably renewed her call for an “assault weapons” ban after a shooting in Atlanta that killed one person and wounded four others.
The attack, carried out by a former member of the Coast Guard with a handgun, occurred in a hospital that had a gun-free policy. Harris made the statement in a tweet on Thursday.

This is not the first time that the Biden administration has pushed for an “assault weapons” ban.
In February of 2023, President Biden called for such a ban after a shooting on the Michigan State University campus, and in his State of the Union Address, he urged Congress to take action in response to a January pistol attack at a Lunar New Year celebration in California.
The White House also advocated for an “assault weapons” ban in November of 2022, following a shooting on the University of Virginia campus.
Despite these efforts, it is important to note that an “assault weapons” ban would not have prevented any of the recent handgun attacks. The shooter in Atlanta used a handgun, not an assault weapon, and the same is true for the other incidents.
It is worth noting that the definition of “assault weapon” varies depending upon your knowledge of guns. Many gun rights advocates argue that such a ban would be ineffective at reducing gun violence. Furthermore, opponents of such bans argue that they infringe on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.
While the debate over gun control and the effectiveness of “assault weapons” bans will likely continue, it is clear that such a ban would not have stopped any of the recent handgun attacks.
