The Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly close to making a decision on whether to bring charges against Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.
The investigation has been ongoing for four years and covers possible crimes involving tax and gun purchases.
Federal prosecutors met with attorneys for Hunter Biden last week, leading to speculation that a charging decision may be imminent.
Sources familiar with the matter claim that the US Attorney from Delaware, David Weiss, is considering pursuing charges against Hunter for tax offenses and lying on a federal gun purchasing form.
The DOJ’s investigation has been a source of frustration for FBI investigators, and an IRS whistleblower recently alleged that Hunter has received preferential treatment under the guidance of Attorney General Merrick Garland.
However, Garland has denied any political motivation behind any delays in the investigation. He has directed reporters to make inquiries about the investigation to Weiss’s office.
Hunter Biden’s laptop, which was seized by the FBI in late 2019, could also play a role in the DOJ’s decision. The laptop contains potentially incriminating information about Hunter’s business dealings with Chinese and Ukrainian entities. It remains unclear how the laptop has aided the investigation.
The investigation into Hunter’s tax affairs began in 2018 and includes a probe into any potential violations of tax and money laundering laws.
Meanwhile, a separate investigation into Hunter’s possession of a firearm was launched after his former sister-in-law and lover, Hallie Biden, disposed of his handgun in a dumpster behind a small grocer in Delaware.
This incident led to a search by Secret Service agents and the disclosure of its sale to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Hunter’s previous drug use is also relevant to the investigation. He was discharged from the Navy Reserve in 2013 after testing positive for cocaine. In his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” Hunter acknowledged that he was abusing crack at the time of the lost gun incident.
Lots of pundits chimed in:
Isn’t it ironic that the Department of Justice chose yesterday to near the end of their investigation into Hunter Biden to make their decision whether or not to charge him?

Republican Senators Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin have been investigating alleged corruption within the Biden family for several years. They are seeking more information after Facebook and Twitter limited the spread of the explosive revelations about Hunter’s laptop in October 2020.
Grassley and Johnson have sent a letter to Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, asking for clarity about the extent to which the FBI communicated with Facebook during the 2020 election about Hunter Biden-related information.
The investigation has been a source of embarrassment for President Biden, who has repeatedly defended his son’s innocence. Hunter has been seen by his father’s side in recent weeks, including during a trip to Ireland where President Joe Biden publicly praised his son and said he was “proud” of him.
If charges are brought against Hunter, it could damage the president’s political standing and harm his legislative agenda.
